The art of calligraphy occupies an honoured place in Arab culture. Expo 2020 architect Asif Khan and Arabic typographer Lara Captan bring this beautiful, storied tradition to life through imaginative Arabic calligraphy benches around the Expo. The words captured in the benches’ shapes represent the UAE’s most cherished values, crowd-sourced from UAE residents. As you rest, take a moment to consider what each bench’s design is inviting you to do. Sit closer to a loved one? Meet the eyes of a friendly new face? Sit back and dream? Chances are that the answer will align with the spirit of the word you are sitting on.

A writing tradition reimagined
Each calligraphy bench takes the lines of an inspiring word in Arabic, from “Vision” to “Hope”, swooping, curving, or jutting in geometric shapes to evoke it. Stretching up to 20 metres long, these unique design elements are shaped by the meaning of the words they express.
