Zara Rutherford, a 19-year old British-Belgian pilot, is attempting to become the youngest woman to fly solo around the world. Joined by special guests Aysha Alhameli, the UAE’s first female pilot, and Marwa Al Matrooshi, the first female Emirati Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO), Zara will be talking about how to encourage girls and young women to pursue their career dreams, particularly in the fields of STEM and aviation. The panel will be discussing the Gender Gap in relation to both career fields and also celebrating the achievements of female Emiratis in the UAE's 50 years. They will also hear more inspiring stories from Emirati pioneers in Aviation, who will share their experiences and struggles.

At Expo 2020, sustainability is an urgent, attainable reality, and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion is the proof. Both immersive exhibition space and exemplar of environmental self-sufficiency, Terra is a pioneering piece of architecture that pushes the limits of renewable design.

The pavilion’s 130-metre-wide solar canopy – so vast that you could park 10 city buses head-to-tail atop it – converts sunshine into electricity for the exhibits below. Artfully funnelled natural light and local plant species, together with technologies that can reduce water consumption by 75 per cent, show the way to a sustainable future.

World Arabic Language Day is celebrated every year on 18 December, coinciding with the day in 1973 that the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted Arabic as the sixth official language of the Organisation. The event highlights the beauty and value of Arabic, to preserve Arabic language heritage and boost the use of Arabic on global political, economic and cultural platforms. Celebrations focus on representing the Arabic language as a symbol of Arab identity, encouraging current and new generations to cherish and cultivate their national heritage. This year’s World Arabic Language Day theme “Arabic Language, a bridge between civilisations” is a call to reaffirm the important role of the Arabic language in connecting people through culture, science, literature and many more domains.

If you educate a woman, you educate a family, if you educate a girl, you educate the future. Sadly, we still have 132 million girls out of school today. 
Twice as many girls as boys will never start school, according to UNESCO. Today only 49 per cent of countries have achieved gender parity in primary education. Threats to girls’ education range from poverty, child marriage, gender biases, poor infrastructure, and conflict, to a lack of gender-responsive pedagogies, policies, data, budgets and more.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the entire education sector. The increased drop-out rates disproportionately affect girls, which further entrench gender gaps in education and lead to increased risk of sexual exploitation,  forced marriage, early pregnancy. The world also faces challenges in updating our educational system and infrastructure to provide e-learning for tomorrow. 

Investing in girls’ education is investing in economic growth, a healthy workforce, lasting peace and a sustainable future for our planet. One additional year of schooling increases a woman’s return from education by 12 percent compared with 10 percent for men.  Gender-equitable education could add up to $12 trillion USD to global growth. It can also cut the risk of violent extremism in half. To have a healthy, prosperous and sustainable society, we must guarantee girls’ education.

When you live somewhere as densely populated as Bahrain, finding social harmony means learning to fit together, intertwining different cultures and faiths. This is the igniting idea behind the Bahrain Pavilion, which explores density through the imaginative lens of weaving. With a modern design punctuated by hundreds of needle-like silver columns, the pavilion showcases Bahraini weaving’s history through live demonstrations and exhibits. Explore traditional textile crafts, experiment with futuristic woven carbon fibre and sample flavours from Bahraini chefs. Participate in the fun yourself through stations featuring looms and palm weaving.

With its enormous population and diversity of ancient traditions, India is a place of incredible richness and complexity. The India Pavilion offers a new take on the country that goes beyond its famed culture and stunning landscapes to show a rising economic power that is very much open for business. The pavilion focuses on “New India”, an emerging global hub for innovation, inspiration and investment. Its wide variety of exhibits feature not just the food, tea and Bollywood entertainment that so many know and love, but also the country’s modern-day advancements in technology, aerospace, manufacturing and more.

The India pavilion is a four-level rectangular structure, covered on its upper three floors with rotating tiles in hues of red, orange, and white. 

This kinetic exterior surface also serves as a screen for projected images, such as the face of Mahatma Gandhi. The bottom level features a plate-glass façade.

For thousands of years, Morocco’s Berber people have built their traditional squared homes and villages out of mud brick, producing structures that have stood for centuries. The Morocco Pavilion at Expo 2020 advances this form in dazzling style, combining modern design and rich heritage to create a uniquely vertical journey through Morocco.

As you ascend the ramp through the pavilion, you’ll experience ancient streetscapes and cutting-edge innovations: everything from traditional Moroccan gardens to one of the world’s largest solar-energy plants, Noor-Ouarzazate. It all ends with a stunning panoramic view from the pavilion’s rooftop area.

Traditional vertical mud-brick villages get a modernist makeover at the Morocco Pavilion. Over a dozen giant blocks formed from hundreds of earthen cubes are stacked in a loose, offset pattern to create a lively, four-storey tower that faintly glows with rusty orange warmth.

The Panama Pavilion at Expo 2020 puts you right in the middle of the action with a virtual-reality cruise through its trademark Panama Canal, the man-made wonder that links the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. You’ll also time travel through an immersive tour of Panama’s history, explore exhibits on the nation’s forward-thinking sustainability and tourism initiatives, and savour delicious Panamanian dishes.

As the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia opens itself to the world, its contribution to Expo 2020 mirrors the nation’s grand ambitions. Boasting a vast façade that covers the area of two football pitches, the Saudi Arabia Pavilion takes the form of an opening window that soars into the sky bearing messages of inspiration.

Your Saudi experience begins in the open plaza under the pavilion, where the giant screen above and LEDs below combine to create a dazzling light show. Next, the “Heritage Path” escalator will transport you to immersive exhibits – and you can end your journey with refreshments and shopping in the pavilion’s scenic palm garden.

Saudi A Features

The monumental Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion is a mirrored slab that extends up diagonally from the ground, resembling a giant window opening toward the sky. The immense structure soars six storeys into the air and covers more than 13,000 square metres, or the area of two football pitches. The sides of the pavilion feature a decorative motif of grey horizontal lines like layered metal, while its vast underbelly — which shades an enormous plaza — is mirrored and smooth.

From the 18th-century writers of the Declaration of Independence to the creators of today’s smartphones and social-media networks, innovation and love of liberty have always been at the very core of America’s identity. The USA Pavilion at Expo 2020 celebrates these twin national pillars with an immersive exploration of the past and future of the American spirit.

Hop on board a moving walkway and see the sights across several large exhibit areas. Attractions include dynamic digital presentations on America’s history of innovation, a fun ceiling-displayed science narrative, an enormous replica space rocket and much more.

The United States Pavilion centres on a broad façade decorated with a modular pattern of large white metal stars, evoking the American flag. A screen of lofty vertical metal slats stands perpendicular to the left edge of the structure, bordering a walkway that leads guests inside, while a wide roof screen overhangs the full length of the façade, providing shade.

Women's World Majlis | 132 Million Girls: Tackling Gender Disparities in Access to Education

Back in 2015, United Nations unveiled the Sustainable Development Goals as a means to work towards a better future. Expo 2020 Dubai’s purpose embodies the two main pillars of these goals: sustainability and opportunity. The global COVID-19 pandemic has further proved the urgency of this global agenda. As this mega-event takes place, Expo 2020 Dubai will become the center of commitment and action in ensuring that no one is left behind. The Leave No One Behind Track of Expo 2020 Dubai's Programme for People and Planet features a tapestry of event series that spotlight the importance of opportunity for all, gender equality and much more.
