The Spain Pavilion at Expo 2020 is an open, eco-friendly exhibition that seamlessly blends ancient heritage and cutting-edge innovation.

An airy ground floor features several small, naturally cooled plazas that are ideal for relaxing or snacking on tapas. Venture underground into aroomy basement, and you’ll explore a “forest of the future” filled with thought-provoking exhibits on Spain’s contributions to global sustainability.

Inspired by Spain’s age-old links to the Arab world, the Spain Pavilion takes the shape of a lively field of sheer, conical towers in hues of brick, orange, and saffron yellow. Visitors venture under this vast canopy of peaks, built from reusable materials including wood, iron and fabric, to explore a series of breezy plazas. The underside of each airy dome is decorated with unique textures that reflect their exhibits: swirls of woven straw, a green canopy of plants, falls of digital water, and more. One dome also shelters a tasty tapas restaurant.

Under the title “New Perspectives”, the Women’s World Majlis programme invites you to recognise a fundamental principle: when women thrive, humanity thrives.

The programme highlights the impact women have made on society and shines a light on their often forgotten contributions. By shifting perspectives, we embrace the infinite approaches to a more balanced world.

A common vision for a unique collaboration; sustainable development goals and aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous world cannot be achieved without gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Sharing this vision, Expo 2020 Dubai and Cartier celebrate women changemakers around the globe, asserting our conviction that innovative collaboration between the private sector, civil society and committed individuals is the pathway to meaningful change.

The landmark African Continental Free Trade Area agreement (AfCFTA) came into effect in early 2021, creating the world’s largest free trade area —a key step towards Africa controlling its own destiny.

What synergies exist between the UAE and Africa, and how can the relationship between the two regions drive progress to realise a shared vision for the future?

GBF Africa, building on its reputation as an essential forum for senior government, business, and finance leaders, will look closely at how Africa is responding to current challenges, particularly those presented by Covid-19, and examine the role of innovation, collaboration and, above all, trade in enabling solutions.

'Contemporary Muslim Fashion' is an award-winning exhibition hosted by Dr Reem El Mutwalli, founder of The Zay Initiative, and introduced by Emirati Designer Feryal Albastaki. Professor Reina Lewis of London College of Fashion was the consulting curator on the project. This one-of-a-kind fashion exhibition featured Muslim designers from around the world, including the UAE. In this session, we hear from the women of power behind this successful exhibition.

Keynote speaker, Prof. Lewis, is showcased in many media works, such as Woman’s Wear Daily, the New York Times, the Times, and The National. She is also the author of many Muslim fashion publications like Contemporary Style Cultures, Modest Fashion, and Contemporary Muslim Fashions to name a few.

Dr Reem El Mutwalli, Founder of The Zay Initiative, also makes an appearance. Her legacy, the 'Sultani' book and fashion collection, became one of the cornerstones of Emirati fashion and the foundation on which her Initiative was built. This non-profit, UK-registered initiative aims to preserve cultural heritage by collecting, documenting and digital archiving Arab historical attire and their stories.

Feryal Albastaki is yet another renowned fashion figure in the region, having participated in a number of exhibitions representing the UAE in Lebanon, London, Beligium, and India.

Joining the session also is Hafsa Lodi, an American-Muslim journalist who covers fashion and culture in the Middle East for The Independent, Refinery29, Teen Vogue, Vogue Arabia, The National, and Mojeh. Her book Modesty: A Fashion Paradox, launched at the 2020 Emirates Literature Festival.
