Curated by the United Arab Emirates Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, this panel discussion tackles the critical and timely issue of water management in the UAE's arid environment. The session also explores new innovations for the procurement of fresh water through more sustainable means, and how these efforts contribute to the UAE's environmental stewardship and encourage more responsible water management.

Keynote panelists include Dr. Dinesh Shetty, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Khalifa University; Dr. Saeed Alhassan, Founder of Manhat; and Dr. Lina Yousef,
an entrepreneur. The session is moderated by Dina Storey, Director of Sustainability at Expo 2020 Dubai.

Open-heartedness and ambition are values captured by the UAE Pavilion, designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. The remarkable building is reminiscent of a falcon in flight, inspired by our national bird. Once inside, go on a multisensory journey that chronicles the rise of a nation of “dreamers who do”. Traverse a dreamlike landscape filled with dunes of real sand to learn about our nation’s founding father Sheikh Zayed, the natural wonders of the Emirates and their rapid modernisation. Be inspired by stories of the UAE dreamers building an inclusive future as the desert sun filters through the pavilion’s oculus. 

The design of the UAE Pavilion evokes a falcon in flight; referencing the Emirates’ traditional art of falconry. The main building resembles a titanic oval, with a grand, four storey entrance set into the tip. More than 25 feather-like panels are arranged at the dome of the pavilion, each curving down toward the entry of the structure.

There are more than 1,400 thermal springs in Hungary, in which Hungarians have soaked for health and relaxation for centuries. The Hungary Pavilion celebrates this rich tradition of thermal bathing with a deep dive into the country’s naturally steaming waters. Follow the glowing blue path to tour the hot springs’ geothermal origins, from the mystical cave bath at Miskolctapolca to the grand spas of Budapest. At the end of your journey, relax and reflect in the pavilion’s meditative inner dome, or take a sip of Hungary’s mineral and thermal waters at the Aqua Bar.

The Hungary pavilion is a wide, gently curved concrete cylinder featuring long, vertical planks of exposed wood. Approached from the front, two thick square columns of intricately woven wood frame the entryway and rise above the main building’s domed roof. The entrance plaza features a miniature forest of smart trees, built of the same wood and featuring digital screens and umbrella-like white roofs. In step with the organic design philosophy, these trees blend in seamlessly with the pavilion’s minimalist gardens.

As the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia opens itself to the world, its contribution to Expo 2020 mirrors the nation’s grand ambitions. Boasting a vast façade that covers the area of two football pitches, the Saudi Arabia Pavilion takes the form of an opening window that soars into the sky bearing messages of inspiration.

Your Saudi experience begins in the open plaza under the pavilion, where the giant screen above and LEDs below combine to create a dazzling light show. Next, the “Heritage Path” escalator will transport you to immersive exhibits – and you can end your journey with refreshments and shopping in the pavilion’s scenic palm garden.

The monumental Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion is a mirrored slab that extends up diagonally from the ground, resembling a giant window opening toward the sky. The immense structure soars six storeys into the air and covers more than 13,000 square metres, or the area of two football pitches. The sides of the pavilion feature a decorative motif of grey horizontal lines like layered metal, while its vast underbelly — which shades an enormous plaza — is mirrored and smooth.

Singapore’s decades-long journey from urban jungle to tree-filled green space has earned it the nickname “City in a Garden”. For Expo 2020, the island country has brought a slice of Singaporean greenery to the Dubai desert, creating a lush, fully explorable rainforest experience.

The open-air Singapore Pavilion unfolds across 1,500 square metres of soft tropical plant life, centred upon three striking, themed garden cones and capped by a solar canopy and hanging garden. Sample the authentic flavours of Singapore at the Sky Market, take in the leafy vistas from the canopy walk, or just take a deep breath and enjoy the garden’s calming quiet.

An abundance of plant life amid the Dubai desert, the Singapore Pavilion is a sustainable rainforest paradise, inspired by the island nation’s nickname: “City in a Garden”. The open-air structure is both surrounded by and covered with tropical greenery. Beginning at ground level, a lush garden filled with trees and shrubs encircles the three massive cone structures that form the pavilion’s core.

Inside and out, the focus here is on Australian innovation. From the ancient astronomy of the Aboriginal peoples, which you can learn about through an immersive projection show on the pavilion’s interior dome, to the sustainably produced timber that forms the pavilion’s hill-shaped exterior, there’s no shortage of blue-sky ideas here to explore.
