At Expo 2020, sustainability is an urgent, attainable reality, and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion is the proof. Both immersive exhibition space and exemplar of environmental self-sufficiency, Terra is a pioneering piece of architecture that pushes the limits of renewable design.

The pavilion’s 130-metre-wide solar canopy – so vast that you could park 10 city buses head-to-tail atop it – converts sunshine into electricity for the exhibits below. Artfully funnelled natural light and local plant species, together with technologies that can reduce water consumption by 75 per cent, show the way to a sustainable future.

Terra is a super-sized marvel of forward-thinking design. Climate Change Conversation on Sustainable Infrastructure - Part 2 

Climate change is causing major transformations across the world, putting entire populations at risk. How important is the role of architecture and urban planning in helping restore health of communities and planet?
From pandemics to droughts, wildfires to hurricanes: nature's response to our growing activities is now affecting entire communities at a scale and frequency that we have not seen before. 
Studies now show that an ailing planet has a direct correlation with human health. While in 2015, diseases caused by air, water and soil pollution were responsible for 16% of all global death - more than smoking, hunger, natural disasters, war, AIDS, or malaria - today the frequency of climate related events continues to accelerate as well as increase in scale and impact.  
Poorer communities are often on the frontline of climate change, and most vulnerable when disaster strikes. Urban populations are also at risk as cities and large metropolises will be overexposed to climate impacts that will require careful planning of infrastructure, construction, materials as well as how resources in a city are managed. Architecture certainly has a major role to play in providing creative solutions to the way we design our built environment.

For centuries, Portuguese explorers such as Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan sailed the world, creating new connections with Africa, India and beyond. Now at Expo 2020, the country is honouring its heritage of multiculturalism at the Portugal Pavilion, a celebration of diversity and inclusion.

The pavilion’s theme is “A World in One Country”, and you’ll see this idea reflected in its exhibits, including the dynamic digital faces that welcome you and a garden area that showcases Portugal’s biodiversity. Other attractions include tours of the country’s aerospace industry and “blue” ocean economy, as well as the best of Portuguese cuisine.

With tall sail-shaped façades that rise high into the air, the Portugal Pavilion recalls a white sailing ship cruising through Expo 2020, much as Portuguese explorers like Ferdinand Magellan, featured within, once sailed across the globe. 

The pavilion’s bottom level is open in the centre, with sturdy grey structures to either side. Resting upon these is the broad main exhibit hall, a squared-off take on the caravel, a 15th century Portuguese boat design renowned for its speed. Its four rectangular sails stand tall at various heights.

The magnificent, snow-capped Swiss Alps are renowned for their stunning natural majesty. Now, at Expo 2020, you can have your own breathtaking alpine experience – no climbing boots or ice axe required. The Switzerland Pavilion offers a simulated hike through the country’s mountains, traversing a dense sea of fog. After cresting the spectacular summit, you’ll reach an enchanting city of opportunities where you can explore Swiss innovation, take in traditional performances and sample mouth-watering Swiss chocolate.

The Switzerland Pavilion's bold, funnel-shaped mirror façade reflects the ground in front of the pavilion: a massive red carpet decorated with a white Swiss cross. The polygonal mirror panels converge at a  doorway in the lower left of the building, crafted from scaffolding and textiles inspired by Bedouin tents.

Energy generation accounts for a large percentage of greenhouse gas emissions, but also holds answers for achieving a sustainable future.

Access to affordable energy is a basic requirement for development in today’s world. Today while some 770 million people lack access to electricity, energy generation is one of the largest contributors to global emissions.

Renewable energy currently represents close to 30 percent of total electricity supply worldwide. And some studies indicate solar and wind energy could entirely replace fossil fuels by 2050. However, technical, economic and policy challenges continue to exist, slowing down progress, when we indeed might need to accelerate it. 

With climate change topping global political agendas, and the world’s commitment to limiting the planet’s warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius in the balance, the focus on transforming how we produce and use energy is as important as ever.

Capped by a digitally enhanced “cumulus cloud” that provides shade in the daytime and a canvas for dazzling light displays at night, the Australia Pavilion is a vibrant showcase for the kind of imagination Australians like to call “Blue Sky Dreaming”.

Inside and out, the focus here is on Australian innovation. From the ancient astronomy of the Aboriginal peoples, which you can learn about through an immersive projection show on the pavilion’s interior dome, to the sustainably produced timber that forms the pavilion’s hill-shaped exterior, there’s no shortage of blue-sky ideas here to explore.
