The Opening Ceremony: A Story of Hope

Expo 2020 Dubai, the first Expo in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region in the 170 years of World Expo history, opened with a celebration of global togetherness and optimism. Spectacular storytelling, performances, fireworks, and immersive projections on the dome of Al Wasl, the heart of Expo 2020, all told a story of collaboration and hope for the future, echoing Expo 2020 Dubai's theme of "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future". Global artists joining in the celebration included Andrea Bocelli, Ellie Goulding, Lang Lang and Mohammed Abdu.

Expo 2020 Dubai Opening Ceremony

Long ago, travellers referred to Dubai as Al Wasl, or “the connection” – a name that reflects the area’s heritage as a meeting point. This spirit of coming together takes shape in Al Wasl Plaza, Expo 2020’s spectacular centrepiece and gathering ground for celebration and wonder. 

Situated at the meeting point of Expo’s three thematic districts, Al Wasl Plaza's dome is tall enough to fit the Leaning Tower of Pisa beneath it. By night, she transforms into a 360-degree projection screen, blanketed by more than 250 state-of-the-art projectors. Al Wasl Plaza is a hub for visitors and the vibrant heart of our Expo.

In partnership with the UAE's General Women's Union and UN Women, The League of Arab States celebrates pioneering Arab women with a Distinction Award, shedding light on the progressive and continuous role of women in selected fields and honouring their leadership achievements, experiences and creativity. This award ceremony coincides with the "League of Arab States Honour Day" celebrations at Expo 2020 Dubai.

The Distinction Award emanates from the strategic and effective role that Arab women play in the development of societies. Women leadership is pivotal for building modern, informative, technological and administrative economies, and enhancing civil societies and governmental institutions in various sectors.

In line with the Arab League's agenda; to produce generations of promising women and young girl leaders who are innovative, distinctive, and support national economies - this award of excellence is dedicated to Arab women to honour their high level achievements and celebrate thier contributions to the field of Medicine.

The Distinction Award for Arab Women is an annual event. It follows an open nomination mechanism; open to all women from the League of Arab States. Arbitration is neutral and depends on the criteria of achievement and excellence of each candidate in reaching the degree of distinction.

Under the title “New Perspectives”, the Women’s World Majlis programme invites you to recognise a fundamental principle: when women thrive, humanity thrives.

The programme highlights the impact women have made on society and shines a light on their often forgotten contributions. By shifting perspectives, we embrace the infinite approaches to a more balanced world.

A common vision for a unique collaboration; sustainable development goals and aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous world cannot be achieved without gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Sharing this vision, Expo 2020 Dubai and Cartier celebrate women changemakers around the globe, asserting our conviction that innovative collaboration between the private sector, civil society and committed individuals is the pathway to meaningful change.

Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh is a passionate, humanitarian driven, motivational leader and a women’s rights advocate. Her Excellency is the  Assisstant Secretary General, Head of the Social Sector at the League of Arab States, since 2018 and has previously headed the Media and Communication Sector from 2013 to 2018.

Before becoming the ASG at LAS, Dr. Abu Ghazaleh was appointed as a Jordanian Representative to the Arab Women Organization. While serving at the (AWO), His Majesty King Abdulla II appointed her Minister of Tourism and Antiquities in 2011 and a Senator to the Jordanian Upper House of Parliament in 2009. During the period of 2007–2011, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah appointed Dr. Abu Ghazaleh as the Secretary General at the National Council for Family Affairs.

Dr. Abu Ghazaleh conducted pioneering work for more than 12 years while being the Regional Director of (UNIFEM) Arab States Regional Office. For more than three decades, she has been heavily involved and active at the Global Regional and National level in the areas of policy and legislative reform; gender mainstreaming; strategic planning; human rights; peace and security; and media and communication.

Dr. Abu Ghazaleh holds two PhDs in Education and Psychology, an MA in Educational Counseling, and a BA in Psychology and Sociology. She has published over a hundred papers, publications, and journal articles based on her knowledge and expertise.
