In February 1968, this nation's founding fathers met under a desert tent and shared an idea that would turn into something truly great: the United Arab Emirates. Animated by this spirit of collaboration, The Good Place by Expo Live is an exhibition space dedicated to showcasing human potential and those who work to advance it – through the Expo Live innovation and partnership programme and beyond.

With a design inspired by the tent where the UAE was conceived, the pavilion showcases social innovations conceived to improve our lives. Come and meet ordinary people doing extraordinary things – and be inspired to join our global community.

Designed by renowned Emirati architect Ahmad Abdulrahman Bukhash, The Good Place’s structure expands the Bedouin tent shape into an elegant white canopy, folded with seven origami-like angles on each side to join at a tall peak. The tent seems to float over a clean, glass box.

Open-heartedness and ambition are values captured by the UAE Pavilion, designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. The remarkable building is reminiscent of a falcon in flight, inspired by our national bird. Once inside, go on a multisensory journey that chronicles the rise of a nation of “dreamers who do”. Traverse a dreamlike landscape filled with dunes of real sand to learn about our nation’s founding father Sheikh Zayed, the natural wonders of the Emirates and their rapid modernisation. Be inspired by stories of the UAE dreamers building an inclusive future as the desert sun filters through the pavilion’s oculus. 

The design of the UAE Pavilion evokes a falcon in flight; referencing the Emirates’ traditional art of falconry. The main building resembles a titanic oval, with a grand, four storey entrance set into the tip. More than 25 feather-like panels are arranged at the dome of the pavilion, each curving down toward the entry of the structure.

Inspired by British physicist Stephen Hawking, who challenged humanity to ponder how we might express ourselves to alien civilisations, the UK Pavilion invites visitors to contribute to a unique linguistic experiment. While exploring this cone-shaped structure, which showcases the UK’s contributions to space science and artificial intelligence, you can add your own words to the pavilion’s neural network. A language-generating algorithm then processes these entries into an ever-changing “poem” that will be displayed on the pavilion’s LED façade, providing an inspiring collective message to Expo 2020, our planet and maybe even worlds beyond.

The awe-inspiring UK Pavilion is an epic, 20-metre-tall, cone-shaped structure compiled of rows of horizontal timber slats that stretch forward to create a circular form. The end of each slat houses a LED panel that emits phrases that link to form an ever-changing interstellar message crafted by artificial intelligence and Expo visitors.

Centuries ago, Paris earned the nickname “City of Light” for its early adoption of street lighting, which lit the way for great leaps in human development. With the France Pavilion, the nation brings this same concept to Expo 2020 in quintessentially French style, offering a collection of luminous spaces that explore how light enables human progress.
From the illuminated surfaces on the pavilion’s exterior to the glowing dreamscapes and lighthouse within, you’ll bask in an array of radiant exhibits, with a special emphasis on French mobility. Best of all, the photovoltaic tiles on the pavilion’s outer façade mean it’s all powered sustainably.

At first glance, the France Pavilion simply looks like a linked complex of grey, squared structures - a massive upside-down “L” shape hanging in space over a central plaza. And then, the lights blaze on: more than 2,000 square metres of illuminated surfaces cover almost the entire façade of the pavilion, from ceilings to walls.

In Jamaica, it’s not only the country’s legendary reggae beats that get things moving: the country’s bustling ports shift plenty of global cargo as well. The Jamaica Pavilion brings you the best of both, throwing a musical street party amid colourful shipping containers to tell the story of how the island nation’s rhythms connect and move the world.

You’ll feel island vibes as soon as you enter the pavilion, thanks to its lively sound system and vivid graffiti art – but there’s plenty to learn here as well. Explore Jamaican history and culture, be inspired by its accomplishments in sport and take in views of the island’s gorgeous beaches.

In our rapidly digitising online age, the real and virtual worlds blur together more and more every day. With its futuristic honeycomb design and deeply immersive experience, the Serbia Pavilion at Expo 2020 gives us a dazzling preview of the hyper-virtual world of tomorrow.

The pavilion experience combines visionary holographic and virtual-reality exhibits with a panoramic tour of Serbia’s heritage. Create your own digital avatar and explore the nation’s Neolithic Vinča culture, get up close and personal with legendary Serbian innovators such as Nikola Tesla, survey Serbian panoramas and much more.

The Serbia Pavilion resembles a sharp white crystal jutting high into the sky. The exterior of the structure is composed of flat triangular surfaces, with glowing white edges which grow in size as they climb toward a high, blade-like point. The entire building pitches at an angle, creating an overhang above an entry courtyard. Digital lights adorn the pavilion’s underside, adding to the futuristic feel.

In today’s hyperconnected world, mobility is more important than ever – so what better way to embody this than through a visionary structure that looks ready to take flight? With its space-age contours and awe-inspiring exhibits, Alif – The Mobility Pavilion offers visitors an immersive journey through the spectrum of human movement. 

But Mobility – one of Expo’s three main subthemes – is also about moving ideas. Take the lift to the pavilion’s top floor and undertake a voyage into the often-invisible ways that mobility unites us, from the campfire of a nomadic Bedouin all the way through the ultra-connected cities of humanity’s future.


Visitors ride the world’s largest passenger lift, which can transport more than 160 people at a time. The Bedouin girl in the middle of the lift is illuminated, reaching up towards the stars, symbolising the desire to reach new heights.

Nine-metre-tall photo-realistic giants of mobility from the golden age of Arab civilisation, including 15th Century seafarer and navigator Ibn Majid, 11th Century historian and geographer Al-Bakri, and 14th Century explorer Ibn Battuta.
